Microsoft released the Office 2021 generation as the one-time purchase alternative to the Microsoft 365 subscription, and Professional Plus is the most complete package in that line. It combines Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote with two programs that the smaller editions leave out: Access for desktop databases and Publisher for page layout. All applications are installed locally on Windows, so documents can be created and edited without a browser.
Microsoft built this edition for organisations that prefer a fixed feature set over monthly changes to the interface. Because the applications keep the functions they shipped with, training material and internal procedures stay valid. The suite also shares the 16.0 program version with Office 2016 and 2019, so templates, macros and add-ins built for those versions usually carry over with little testing.
How it is used in everyday work
A typical working day with the suite moves between several programs. A controller pulls an export from the accounting system into Excel, matches it against a price list and places the resulting chart in a PowerPoint deck for the weekly meeting. An assistant revises a contract in Word with tracked changes and sends it from Outlook.
This edition pays off most in small and mid-sized offices where one person covers several roles. An office manager may keep the customer or stock list in an Access database with entry forms, then produce a price sheet or event flyer in Publisher. Teams that store files on OneDrive or SharePoint can also edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents at the same time and see each other's changes as they happen.
The functions that make a practical difference
Excel changed the most in this release. XLOOKUP replaces the older VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP combination and searches in any direction, while formulas such as FILTER, SORT and UNIQUE return a whole result range from a single cell. The LET function names intermediate results inside a formula, which makes long calculations easier to read and audit. Reporting sheets need fewer helper columns as a result.
In PowerPoint, a presentation can be recorded with narration, the presenter's camera image and ink annotations, then exported as a video for colleagues who missed the live session. Outlook translates incoming messages into another language from within the message itself. Access 2021 adds the Date/Time Extended data type, which stores more precise timestamps and matches the datetime2 type in SQL Server. Word, Excel and PowerPoint also read and save OpenDocument Format 1.3, which helps when exchanging files with LibreOffice users.
Choosing the right edition
Home & Student 2021 centres on Word, Excel and PowerPoint for private use, while Home & Business 2021 adds Outlook and is intended for small companies. Professional 2021 extends that set with Access and Publisher, so its application lineup is almost identical to this edition. The difference lies mainly in positioning and administration: Professional Plus is Microsoft's business build, deployed with the Office Deployment Tool and manageable through Group Policy, and it provides the Skype for Business client as an optional component. If Word, Excel and Outlook cover your needs, Home & Business is the leaner choice; if databases or managed rollouts matter, Professional Plus fits better.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
The most important point is timing. Microsoft ends support for the entire Office 2021 family on 13 October 2026 without an extended support phase, so no security updates or bug fixes follow after that date, although the installed programs keep working. Publisher reaches end of life in the same month and is not part of any newer Office version, so its files are best converted to PDF or Word over time. The suite receives no new features, Power View is not available in this Excel version, and connections to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online are only supported while the product is in support.

Can it open files created in Microsoft 365?
Both use the same DOCX, XLSX and PPTX formats, so files open normally in either direction. Spreadsheets that rely on Excel functions added to Microsoft 365 after 2021 may show calculation errors, because those functions do not exist in this version.
Is Microsoft Teams part of the package?
