Windows Server 2019 Datacenter at a glance

Windows Server 2019 is the Long-Term Servicing Channel release of Microsoft's server operating system, based on version 1809 and published in late 2018. Within this release, Datacenter is the top edition, positioned above Standard and Essentials. It contains every role and feature of Standard and adds the components Microsoft reserves for software-defined data centers: Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica without restrictions, Shielded Virtual Machines with the Host Guardian Service, and the full Software-Defined Networking stack.

The edition is built for running many virtual workloads on a small number of powerful hosts. Its licensing model is designed for densely virtualized servers, which makes it the usual choice for Hyper-V clusters, hyper-converged infrastructure and private cloud environments. A company with one file server or a few physical machines rarely needs it, while an organisation consolidating many servers onto clustered hardware usually does.

How it is used in everyday work

Daily administration typically runs through Windows Admin Center, the browser-based console Microsoft released alongside this version. From there an administrator checks cluster health, reviews the capacity of storage pools, live-migrates virtual machines between nodes before maintenance and installs updates with Cluster-Aware Updating, which patches one node at a time while clustered workloads continue on the others. Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager and PowerShell remain available whenever finer control or scripted automation is needed.

Infrastructure teams in mid-sized and larger companies, managed service providers and hosting businesses get the most out of this edition. A common sequence is to install it on several identical servers, pool their local drives with Storage Spaces Direct, form a failover cluster and then deploy file servers, database instances and remote desktop hosts as virtual machines on top. Many teams choose the Server Core installation for hosts to reduce the attack surface and the number of updates, and keep the Desktop Experience for servers that need graphical tools.

The functions that make a practical difference

Storage Spaces Direct combines the internal SSDs and hard drives of clustered servers into one fault-tolerant pool, so many workloads no longer need a separate SAN. The 2019 release added support for persistent memory in this pool and data deduplication on ReFS volumes, which can noticeably reduce the space occupied by virtual machine files. Storage Replica copies volumes block by block to another server or site, either synchronously or asynchronously, and in Datacenter it is free of the volume size and partnership limits that apply in Standard.

Shielded Virtual Machines encrypt guest systems and prevent fabric administrators from inspecting or altering them, and since this release the protection also covers Linux guests. Software-Defined Networking supplies Network Controller, a software load balancer and gateways, so virtual networks are defined and isolated in software instead of on physical switches. System Insights, a built-in predictive analytics feature, forecasts trends such as storage and processor consumption, which helps administrators plan capacity before a shortage occurs.

Choosing the right edition

The 2019 release is offered mainly in three editions. Essentials targets small businesses running a single server in a simple environment with no need for advanced virtualization. Standard includes the core roles, Hyper-V, failover clustering and a restricted form of Storage Replica, and its licensing suits physical servers or hosts with only a few virtual machines. Datacenter adds Storage Spaces Direct, Shielded Virtual Machines, the Host Guardian Service, Software-Defined Networking and unrestricted Storage Replica, and its licensing is designed for hosts that carry many virtual machines. As a guideline, the more virtual workloads a host runs and the more its storage depends on software, the stronger the case for Datacenter.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

Microsoft ended mainstream support for this release in January 2024. It continues to receive security updates under extended support until January 2029, but no new features. Hotpatching and SMB over QUIC, introduced with Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition, are not part of this version. The integration with Microsoft Defender ATP is built in, but the threat protection service itself requires a separate subscription. Client Access Licences for users or devices connecting to the server are not included in a server licence and are purchased separately.

Common questions before ordering

Can an existing Windows Server 2016 installation be upgraded in place?
Microsoft supports in-place upgrades to the 2019 release from Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016. For clusters running 2016, Cluster Operating System Rolling Upgrade allows nodes to be upgraded one after another while the cluster stays online. Older servers can be moved with Storage Migration Service, which transfers data, shares and configuration to a new machine.

Does Datacenter include everything Standard offers?
Yes, Datacenter contains all roles and features of Standard, including Hyper-V, failover clustering and Active Directory services. The differences lie in the additional data center features and in the licensing for virtualization, not in missing components.

Can I switch between Server Core and the graphical interface later?
No, the installation option is chosen during setup and cannot be converted afterwards. For Server Core installations, the optional App Compatibility Feature on Demand adds selected graphical tools such as Event Viewer and File Explorer.
