This is the highest on-premises edition of Microsoft's Windows Server 2022 generation, the Long-Term Servicing Channel release that followed Windows Server 2019. It shares its foundation with the Standard edition, including the same Hyper-V hypervisor and the same Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file server and IIS roles. What sets Datacenter apart is a group of features Microsoft reserves for it in software-defined storage, software-defined networking and virtual machine protection.
The edition is designed for physical hosts that carry many virtual machines and for clusters where storage and networking are handled in software instead of dedicated SAN arrays and network appliances. Typical buyers are companies operating their own virtualization platform, hosting providers, and IT departments consolidating many server workloads onto fewer, more powerful machines.
How it is used in everyday work
Administrators rarely work directly at these servers. Most tasks run remotely through Windows Admin Center, Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager or PowerShell. A typical sequence is creating a virtual machine from a template, connecting it to a virtual network, placing its disks on a clustered volume and adding it to a failover cluster so that it restarts on another node if a host fails. Cluster-Aware Updating handles patching in a similar way by moving workloads off a node, updating and restarting it, and then bringing the workloads back.
Infrastructure teams that run a virtualization platform for the rest of the company get the most out of it, as do managed service providers hosting customer systems on shared hardware. Many hosts are installed as Server Core, which runs without a graphical desktop and needs fewer updates, while the Desktop Experience option remains available for administrators who prefer a familiar interface.
The functions that make a practical difference
Storage Spaces Direct pools the internal drives of several cluster nodes into one shared, fault-tolerant storage layer, which removes the need for an external SAN in many hyperconverged designs. Storage Replica copies volumes block by block to a second server or site, synchronously or asynchronously, and in this edition it runs without the restrictions that apply in Standard. The Network Controller and related software-defined networking components let administrators define virtual networks, load balancing and firewall policies centrally, which is essential for multi-tenant hosting.
Shielded virtual machines work together with the Host Guardian Service to encrypt VMs and allow them to start only on approved hosts, so someone with access to the virtualization layer cannot simply copy and read a machine's disks. The 2022 generation also brings Secured-core server support based on TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and virtualization-based security, makes TLS 1.3 the default protocol version, and adds AES-256 encryption for SMB traffic. Azure Arc lets the server be inventoried and managed from the Azure portal while it stays in your own rack.
Choosing the right edition
Windows Server 2022 Standard uses the same code base and suits domain controllers, file servers and application servers with little virtualization. It lacks Storage Spaces Direct, shielded VMs and software-defined networking, and its Storage Replica is limited to one partnership and one volume of up to 2 TB. Datacenter is the choice for dense virtualization hosts and hyperconverged clusters. Microsoft also offers Datacenter: Azure Edition, which adds hotpatching and SMB over QUIC but runs only in Azure and on Azure Stack HCI, so it cannot replace this edition on your own hardware. Essentials is sold only preinstalled on server hardware for very small businesses.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
Hotpatching, which applies many security updates without a restart, and SMB over QUIC for file access without a VPN are not part of this edition in the 2022 generation. Client access licences for users or devices connecting to the server are a separate purchase, as are Remote Desktop Services CALs if you plan to host remote desktops. Shielded VMs in production need a separately deployed Host Guardian Service. Because Microsoft has since released Windows Server 2025, confirm that your backup software, management tools and business applications are certified for 2022 before standardising on it.

Yes, both installation options are on the same installation media and you select one during setup. Switching between them later requires a new installation, so decide before deployment.
Can existing Windows Server 2016 or 2019 machines be upgraded?
Microsoft supports in-place upgrades from both versions to 2022. Failover clusters can be moved node by node using Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade, which keeps workloads running during the transition.
