Windows Server 2022 Standard at a glance
Windows Server 2022 Standard is the general-purpose edition of Microsoft's server operating system, released in 2021 as a Long-Term Servicing Channel version. It runs on physical hardware or as a virtual machine and provides the infrastructure roles most organisations depend on: Active Directory Domain Services, DNS and DHCP, file and print services, IIS for web applications and the Hyper-V hypervisor.
Within the family, Standard sits between Essentials for very small businesses and Datacenter for heavily virtualised hosts and software-defined infrastructure. The core server roles match those of Datacenter; the differences lie in advanced storage, networking and virtual machine protection. Standard is therefore the usual choice for a server that handles domain services and file storage, or for a host running a few virtual workloads.
How it is used in everyday work
A typical installation is the central server of an office or branch. It authenticates users and computers against Active Directory, applies Group Policy, assigns IP addresses and resolves internal names. Administrators work through Server Manager and the MMC consoles or remotely through Windows Admin Center, a free browser-based management tool from Microsoft.
Many companies also host line-of-business software on this edition, for example an ERP database, an accounting package or an internal portal on IIS. Small IT teams and managed service providers value that the roles and tools carry over from earlier server generations, so existing procedures still apply. Where hybrid cloud is planned, Azure Arc connects the server to Azure for central inventory, policy and monitoring while the workload stays on site.
The functions that make a practical difference
Security received the most attention in this release. On Secured-core certified hardware, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and virtualization-based security work together against firmware attacks and credential theft. TLS 1.3 is enabled by default, and the DNS client supports DNS over HTTPS, which encrypts name lookups in transit. File servers gain AES-256 encryption for SMB traffic, including traffic between cluster nodes.
SMB compression shrinks large files during transfer, which helps when branch offices copy installation images or video from a central share over slower links. Hyper-V now supports nested virtualization on AMD processors, useful for test labs. Windows containers use smaller base images, and Storage Migration Service moves file shares together with their permissions from older servers onto new hardware or into Azure.
Choosing the right edition
Essentials targets very small organisations and is normally supplied preinstalled on server hardware. Standard contains the full set of core roles for physical servers and lightly virtualised hosts. Datacenter adds Storage Spaces Direct, the software-defined networking stack, Shielded Virtual Machines and unrestricted Storage Replica, which makes it the edition for dense virtualisation hosts and hyperconverged clusters. Datacenter: Azure Edition, which runs on Azure and Azure Stack HCI, is the only one in this generation with hotpatching and SMB over QUIC. Hotpatching installs many security updates without a restart.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
Standard cannot build a hyperconverged cluster with Storage Spaces Direct, and it cannot act as a guarded host for shielded virtual machines. Storage Replica is included but restricted to one partnership and a single volume of up to 2 TB. Server Core and Desktop Experience cannot be converted into each other after setup, so choose the installation option deliberately. Microsoft's mainstream support for this release ends on 13 October 2026; security updates continue under extended support until October 2031, while new feature development has moved to Windows Server 2025.
Common questions before ordering
Can an existing Windows Server 2019 machine be upgraded in place?
Yes. Microsoft supports in-place upgrades to this release from Windows Server 2016 and 2019, keeping roles, settings and data. Take a full backup first, and plan a clean migration for older systems.
Is Hyper-V part of the Standard edition?
Yes. The Hyper-V role uses the same hypervisor as Datacenter, including live migration and Hyper-V Replica for copying virtual machines to a second host. Shielded virtual machines, however, require Datacenter.
Should I choose this release or Windows Server 2025?
Windows Server 2025 is newer and adds features such as hotpatching for on-premises servers through Azure Arc. The 2022 release remains a sensible choice when your applications, backup software or management tools are certified for it, or when you want to match servers already in use.
