Windows Server 2025 Standard core add-on at a glance

Microsoft licenses the Standard edition of its current server operating system per physical processor core instead of per server. This add-on is the unit that enlarges an existing Standard licence when a host contains more cores than the licence already covers, for example after a hardware refresh or a move to processors with a higher core density. It belongs to the Windows Server 2025 family and applies only to the Standard edition.

The add-on does not install a different operating system and does not alter the feature set. What changes is licensing coverage: the add-on closes the gap between the cores your base licence covers and the cores physically present in the machine, so the deployment stays in line with the per-core rules Microsoft sets for this edition.

How it is used in everyday work

In practice, core add-ons are ordered at specific moments in a server's life. An administrator plans a new host, counts the physical cores across all processors, compares that figure with the licences the company already owns and buys add-ons for the difference. The same calculation comes up when an older dual-socket machine is replaced by newer processors with more cores per socket, or when an existing host receives a second CPU.

A fully licensed Standard host typically carries the central services of a small or mid-sized organisation: domain controllers, DNS and DHCP, file shares, print services, internal web applications and a moderate number of Hyper-V guests. For a business with one or two physical hosts and a light virtualization load, extending Standard core by core is often more economical than switching to Datacenter.

The functions that make a practical difference

Because the add-on extends the Standard edition, the functions you license are those of Standard itself. A notable change in this release is that SMB over QUIC, previously limited to Datacenter: Azure Edition, is now part of Standard. It gives remote staff and branch offices encrypted access to file shares without a traditional VPN. GPU partitioning is included as well, so one physical graphics card can be shared between virtual machines, and Microsoft supports live migration of such machines between standalone hosts during planned maintenance.

Failover Clustering and Storage Replica are also available in Standard, so services and data volumes can stay reachable while one host is offline. Servers can additionally be connected to Azure Arc. Microsoft offers hotpatching, which applies many security updates without a restart, as a separately billed Arc service.

Choosing the right edition

The neighbouring editions differ mainly in scale and in a handful of advanced features. Essentials is licensed per server rather than per core, needs no client access licences and is aimed at small businesses with a single modest server, so it does not use core add-ons at all. Datacenter is licensed per core like Standard, but adds Storage Spaces Direct, the Network Controller for software-defined networking and Host Guardian support for shielded virtual machines, together with broader virtualization rights. Standard add-ons suit mostly physical workloads or light virtualization, while hosts meant to carry many virtual machines are usually better served by Datacenter.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

This product is not a standalone licence. It only extends a server that is already licensed with Standard core licences of the same version. Microsoft requires every physical core in a server to be licensed, with minimum counts per processor and per server, so check the exact core count of your hardware before ordering. Users or devices that connect to the server additionally need Windows Server client access licences, and Remote Desktop sessions require separate RDS CALs. Storage Spaces Direct and shielded virtual machines remain reserved for Datacenter and cannot be enabled by adding more cores.

Common questions before ordering

Can I use the core add-on without a base licence?
No. The add-on extends Standard core licensing on a server that is already licensed for this edition and version. On its own it does not license a server.

Does licensing more cores add Datacenter features?
No. The feature set is defined by the edition, not by the number of licensed cores. Functions such as Storage Spaces Direct or the Network Controller require Datacenter licences.

Are client access licences included?
No. Windows Server CALs are purchased separately for the users or devices that access the server. Remote Desktop Services sessions need RDS CALs in addition.
