Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is the largest edition in Microsoft's current generation of fixed-release Office suites, the product line that exists alongside the Microsoft 365 subscription apps. From there, the work usually moves into Excel for monthly reporting, into Word for contracts or proposals, and into PowerPoint for the slides that present the result.
The inclusion of Access decides who benefits most from this edition. Office managers, controllers and small IT teams often keep their own databases for stock, customer records or project tracking, and Access lets them build tables, queries, forms and reports without running a separate database server. Departments that already depend on an older Access application need this edition to keep editing it, because the Standard and consumer editions of Office 2024 do not contain the program.
The functions that make a practical difference
Excel receives the most substantial additions. Fourteen new text and array functions, among them TEXTSPLIT, TEXTBEFORE, VSTACK and CHOOSECOLS, make it much easier to split text strings and to combine, reshape or select ranges without long nested formulas. Charts can now reference dynamic arrays, so a chart grows or shrinks by itself when the underlying result changes length. The IMAGE function places pictures inside cells, where they stay with their row during sorting and filtering.
In PowerPoint, cameo puts a live camera feed directly onto a slide, and the Recording Studio captures narration, ink and video before exporting the presentation as a video file, with closed captions available for embedded media. Word now reopens every document that was open when the program closed unexpectedly. Word, Excel and PowerPoint save OpenDocument files in ODF 1.4 by default. Access adds a Dataverse connector for moving tables into the Microsoft Power Platform once a database outgrows the desktop.
Choosing the right edition
Office LTSC Standard 2024 contains the same core programs without Access and suits workplaces without database needs. Professional Plus adds Access, which makes it the correct choice as soon as one team relies on an Access solution or plans to build one. On the consumer side, Office Home 2024 contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, while Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook, and neither of the two includes Access. Anyone who wants ongoing feature updates is better served by a Microsoft 365 plan.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
Microsoft Publisher is not part of this generation, because Microsoft ends support for the program in October 2026. Microsoft Teams is not preinstalled and has to be downloaded separately if your organization uses it. Excel no longer offers the Publish to Power BI command, so reports that depended on it need to go through the Power BI service instead. ActiveX controls are switched off by default, which can affect older forms and macros until an administrator enables them again.

Yes, the suite uses the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats as Office 2016, 2019 and 2021, so no conversion is needed. Formulas that use the new Excel 2024 functions, however, will not calculate in older versions of Excel.
Will my existing add-ins and templates keep working?
Microsoft keeps the internal version number at 16.0, the same as in Office 2019 and 2021, so existing Group Policy settings still apply. According to Microsoft, add-ins that work with those versions are likely to work here as well, although a short test before a wider rollout is sensible.
Does Office 2024 Professional Plus include Copilot or real-time co-authoring?
No. Microsoft states that this generation does not include the cloud-backed features of Microsoft 365 Apps, such as real-time collaboration and AI-driven automation. Organizations that need these features should choose a Microsoft 365 subscription.
