This edition is the Standard tier of Office LTSC 2024, the business line of Microsoft Office. LTSC stands for Long Term Service Channel, which means the release keeps the functions it launched with instead of receiving new features month by month. The package contains Outlook for mail and calendars, Word for text documents, Excel for calculation and analysis, PowerPoint for presentations and OneNote for notes, all installed as local desktop applications.
Within the 2024 family, Standard sits directly below Professional Plus. Both share the same core applications and interface, but only Professional Plus adds the Access database program. The Standard edition is therefore aimed at organisations whose daily work revolves around correspondence, spreadsheets, reports and presentations, and which prefer software that behaves identically on every workstation.
How it is used in everyday work
In many offices the working day starts in Outlook. The 2024 version gives more weight to relevant messages, attachments, contacts and calendar entries while you type a search, so an old quote or a supplier's phone number turns up faster. When planning appointments, Outlook can shorten meetings automatically so that staff get a short break between consecutive calls.
From there the work moves into the documents. An accountant builds the monthly figures in Excel, transfers the key results into a Word summary and passes them to a colleague who prepares the PowerPoint slides for the management meeting. Project leads collect meeting notes, sketches and open tasks in OneNote, whose reworked Draw tab offers more pen colours and sizes. This pattern fits administrative teams, finance departments and law or tax offices that exchange files by email or a network drive.
The functions that make a practical difference
Excel receives the largest update in this release. Fourteen new text and array functions, among them TEXTSPLIT and VSTACK, replace many long nested formulas. Charts can now reference dynamic arrays, so a chart extends by itself when the underlying result range grows. With the IMAGE function and in-cell pictures, product photos or logos sit inside a table and stay with their row when you sort or filter.
Word now reopens every document that was open when the program closed unexpectedly, which protects unsaved changes after a crash. PowerPoint adds cameo, which places a live camera image directly on a slide, and a Recording Studio that exports a narrated presentation as a video file. Across Word, Excel and PowerPoint, support for OpenDocument Format 1.4 helps when exchanging files with partners who work with ODF-based office software.
Choosing the right edition
Professional Plus 2024 includes everything in Standard plus Access, so it only makes sense if you build or maintain Access databases. For private households and small businesses, Microsoft also offers Office Home 2024 with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, and Office Home & Business 2024, which adds Outlook. Standard suits businesses that want the full application set including Outlook and OneNote. Teams that depend on real-time co-authoring, Copilot or a steady flow of new functions are better served by a Microsoft 365 plan, because those cloud-backed features are not part of the 2024 releases.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
This edition contains no database application, since Access is reserved for Professional Plus. Microsoft Publisher is not part of the 2024 release because Microsoft is retiring the program, so existing .pub files need a different tool or a conversion plan. Microsoft Teams is not preinstalled and has to be downloaded separately. Excel no longer offers the Publish to Power BI command, and ActiveX controls are disabled by default across the applications, which affects older forms that rely on them. Real-time co-authoring and AI-based automation from Microsoft 365 are not included.

Files in the current formats such as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx open directly. The internal version number stays at 16.0, as in the 2019 and 2021 releases, so Microsoft expects most add-ins to carry over with little testing. Content that depends on ActiveX controls must be re-enabled by an administrator first.
Do we need cloud storage to save our files?
No, documents can be stored on the local drive, a file server or a network share, just as with earlier Office versions. Online storage stays optional.
