Windows Server 2022 Datacenter core add-on at a glance

This add-on is a supplementary core licence for the Datacenter edition of Windows Server 2022, Microsoft's long-term servicing server operating system. Windows Server is licensed per physical processor core, and the Datacenter base licence covers the minimum core count that Microsoft sets for every server. When a host has more cores than that, each additional core must also be licensed, and that is exactly the purpose of this add-on.

Datacenter sits above Essentials and Standard in the product family, next to Datacenter: Azure Edition, which is built for Azure and Azure Stack HCI. The add-on brings no features of its own and does not change the edition. It extends an existing Datacenter licence so that a server with a larger processor configuration is fully licensed and keeps the edition's virtualization rights across the whole machine.

How it is used in everyday work

The add-on is usually ordered when hardware changes. A common case is replacing a virtualization host: the old machine had two eight-core processors, the new one has two 24-core processors, and the existing Datacenter licence no longer covers every core. The administrator counts the physical cores, subtracts the 16 already covered by the base licence, and orders the remaining 32 as add-on cores before the host goes into production.

The same calculation applies when a server receives processors with more cores or when older hosts are consolidated onto denser hardware. Datacenter is chosen for these machines because a fully licensed host may run an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines. The people who maintain these licences are typically infrastructure administrators running Hyper-V clusters, private cloud environments or hosting platforms where the number of virtual machines changes often.

The functions that make a practical difference

Because the add-on extends Datacenter, the functions it keeps available on the larger host are those of the Datacenter edition. The most relevant is the right to run unlimited operating system environments and Hyper-V containers once all cores are licensed, which removes per-VM licence planning on dense hosts. Storage Spaces Direct pools local drives across clustered servers into shared, highly available storage, so no separate storage array is needed.

Software-Defined Networking with the Network Controller lets administrators define and manage virtual networks centrally. Shielded virtual machines, backed by the Host Guardian Service, encrypt VM state and restrict which hosts may start them, which matters for hosting providers and regulated environments. Storage Replica works without the single-partnership and volume-size restrictions of Standard, and the edition also supports Secured-core server with TLS 1.3 enabled by default.

Choosing the right edition

Windows Server 2022 Standard uses the same core-based model and includes Hyper-V, but a fully licensed Standard server covers only two virtual machines, and each further pair requires licensing all cores again. Standard also lacks Storage Spaces Direct, Software-Defined Networking and Shielded VMs, so it suits physical servers and lightly virtualized hosts. Datacenter becomes the more economical choice as virtual machine density grows. Datacenter: Azure Edition adds hotpatching and SMB over QUIC, but it is intended for Azure and Azure Stack HCI rather than for conventional on-premises hosts.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

This is not a standalone licence. It supplements an existing Datacenter base licence and cannot license a server on its own. Microsoft requires every physical core in the server to be licensed, subject to per-processor and per-server minimums, so cores should be counted from the hardware specification rather than estimated. Client Access Licences for connecting users or devices are separate, and Remote Desktop Services access needs RDS CALs in addition. Functions exclusive to Datacenter: Azure Edition, such as hotpatching, are not part of this edition.

Common questions before ordering

How do I calculate the number of add-on cores I need?
Add up the physical cores of all processors in the server, counting at least eight per processor and sixteen per server. Subtract the cores already covered by your base licence, and the remainder is what the add-on must cover. A host with two 20-core processors, for example, needs 24 cores in addition to the base licence.

Do hyper-threads or virtual processors count as cores?
No. Windows Server core licensing counts physical cores only. Logical processors created by hyper-threading and virtual processors assigned to virtual machines are not part of the calculation.

Can I combine this add-on with a Standard licence?
No. Datacenter core licences extend a Datacenter base licence only. A server moving from Standard to Datacenter needs a Datacenter base licence first, after which add-on cores can cover the remaining processor capacity.
