Windows Server 2022 Standard core add-on at a glance

Microsoft licenses Windows Server 2022 by physical processor cores, not per server. A Standard base licence covers 16 cores, which is also the minimum every physical server must be licensed for, and each processor counts as at least eight cores. The core add-on licenses the cores above that baseline: a host with two 12-core processors has 24 physical cores and needs eight add-on cores on top of the 16 already covered.

It is neither a separate installation nor a different edition. The extra cores receive the same rights and feature set as the base licence they extend. Within the Server 2022 family, Standard sits between Essentials, aimed at small single-processor machines, and Datacenter, built for densely virtualised and software-defined infrastructure. Modern server hardware passes the 16-core baseline quickly, which is where this licence becomes necessary.

How it is used in everyday work

The add-on matters during procurement rather than daily administration. A typical case is a hardware refresh: a file server with one eight-core processor is replaced by a dual-socket machine with 32 cores, and the existing base licence now covers only half of them. Another is a branch-office host running a domain controller and a line-of-business application in virtual machines, where the replacement hardware simply ships with more cores.

The administrator's task is short: count the physical cores of every processor, subtract the cores the base licence covers, and order the difference as add-on cores. Nothing changes on the server, so roles such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IIS, Hyper-V and file services keep running as configured. In-house IT teams and service providers who keep licence records ready for audits benefit most, because the add-on closes the gap between installed hardware and licensed cores.

The functions that make a practical difference

Since the add-on licenses the same edition, its value lies in keeping the full Standard platform usable on larger hardware. Secured-core server support combines TPM 2.0, Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement and virtualisation-based security to protect boot and memory against firmware attacks on certified hardware. TLS 1.3 is enabled by default, the DNS client supports DNS over HTTPS, and SMB traffic can be encrypted with AES-256.

Hyper-V now supports nested virtualisation on AMD processors, useful for test labs and container hosts. Windows Admin Center and Azure Arc let administrators manage on-premises servers alongside cloud resources from one interface. Storage Migration Service moves file shares, data and permissions from older Windows servers to new machines, which fits the refresh scenario described above. It can also transfer the old server's identity, so users keep reaching shares under the familiar name.

Choosing the right edition

Server 2022 comes as Essentials, Standard and Datacenter, plus an Azure Edition for Azure and Azure Stack HCI. Essentials is licensed per server for small single-processor systems and has no add-on cores. Standard fits physical servers and lightly virtualised hosts with a limited number of virtual instances. Datacenter adds unlimited virtual machines on a fully licensed host, Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines. Hosts planned for many virtual machines are usually better served by Datacenter. Add-on cores must match the edition of the base licence, so a Datacenter server needs Datacenter cores throughout.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

The add-on cannot be used on its own. It only extends a Standard base licence of the same version, so it does not replace a full licence. Users and devices accessing the server still need separate client access licences, and Remote Desktop Services require RDS CALs. Some functions are reduced or missing in Standard: Storage Spaces Direct needs Datacenter, Storage Replica is limited to one partnership of up to 2 TB, and SMB over QUIC and hotpatching are reserved for the Azure Edition.

Common questions before ordering

Do I need add-on cores for a server with 16 cores or fewer?
Usually not, because the base licence covers 16 cores. Each processor counts as at least eight cores, though, so a server with four quad-core processors counts as 32 cores and needs add-on cores.

Can more add-on cores be licensed after a later hardware upgrade?
Yes. Core licensing is cumulative, so further add-on cores of the same edition can be ordered whenever the server's physical core count grows.

Do these add-on cores work with a Windows Server 2019 licence?
No. Add-on cores are version-specific and extend a base licence of Windows Server 2022 Standard. A server licensed under an older version needs add-on cores for that version.
