Visio & Project 2019 Pro at a glance
This package combines two desktop applications from Microsoft's 2019 product generation: Visio Professional 2019 for diagramming and Project Professional 2019 for scheduling and resource planning. Here both arrive together, each in its Professional edition, the higher of the two editions Microsoft released for these versions.
The combined job is easy to describe. Project holds the schedule with its tasks, dependencies, durations, assigned people and progress against the original plan. Visio holds the visual documentation around it, such as process flows, network layouts, floor plans, organisation charts and technical drawings. Teams that plan work in one program and explain it in the other get both tools from the same release, with matching interface conventions.
How it is used in everyday work
A typical sequence starts in Project. A project manager enters the work breakdown, links tasks so that one cannot begin before another finishes, and assigns staff and equipment. Project then calculates the schedule and highlights the critical path, which is the chain of tasks that directly determines the end date. When the plan has to be presented to management or a customer, the timeline is brought into Visio and laid out as a clear one-page diagram.
Visio is also used independently of the schedule. An IT team documents the network that a migration will change, an operations manager draws the target process before a rollout, and a facilities planner sketches the floor layout for an office move. The pairing suits project offices, IT departments, engineering teams and consultancies, where a schedule rarely travels without a drawing that shows what is actually being built or changed.
The functions that make a practical difference
In Visio Professional, shapes can be connected to data from Excel workbooks, SQL Server databases or SharePoint lists, and data graphics then display values such as status or cost directly on the shapes. Several people can edit the same diagram at once when it is stored in a shared location, and Information Rights Management restricts who may open or forward sensitive drawings. The 2019 release also added templates for UML diagrams, database models and website wireframes.
Project Professional provides the full scheduling engine with baselines for comparing planned and actual progress, built-in reports and a timeline view that can now show bar labels and task progress. The Professional edition can also connect to Project Server or Project Online. Where the two programs meet, Visio imports Project data into its timeline and Gantt chart templates, and visual reports in Project can produce Visio diagrams from schedule data.
Choosing the right edition
Microsoft released both programs in a Standard and a Professional edition. Visio Standard 2019 covers general business diagrams with a solid set of stencils, while the Professional edition adds data linking, simultaneous editing, rights management and the extended technical templates. Project Standard 2019 is designed for a single planner working alone, whereas Project Professional 2019 adds the server connection and the shared resource management that depends on it. Anyone who only needs simple flowcharts and a personal task list may find the Standard editions sufficient.
Practical limits worth knowing before you buy
Some Professional features depend on infrastructure that is not part of this package. Team timesheets and enterprise resource pools in Project require a separate Project Server or Project Online environment, and simultaneous editing in Visio requires the file to be stored on OneDrive or SharePoint. Data exchange between the two programs is an import rather than a live link, so a Visio timeline does not update itself when the schedule changes. Microsoft also ended support for the 2019 generation in October 2025, which means these versions no longer receive security or feature updates.
Common questions before ordering
Are Visio and Project included in Office 2019?
No. Microsoft sells both programs separately from all Office 2019 suites, including Office Professional Plus. This package covers that gap for users who need diagramming and project planning in addition to the standard Office applications.
Do I need Project Server to use Project Professional 2019?
No. The program works fully as a standalone desktop application for planning, scheduling and reporting. A server environment only becomes necessary for shared enterprise features such as central resource pools and team timesheets.
Can Visio turn a Project schedule into a diagram?
Yes. The timeline and Gantt chart templates in Visio include an import function that reads task data from a Project file. The resulting drawing can then be formatted and annotated like any other Visio diagram.
